Monday - The International Day of Misery

Oh, Monday.
It should be federal law that schools should not be open on Mondays.
Then everyone could hate Tuesdays.

I've made a discovery, which I shall relay for your enlightenment:

Don't take the expressway in the morning if you don't have to!!
For the first couple weeks of school I took the expressway at about 7:20 in the morning. I almost always got stuck in traffic.
It's really amazing how small the window of time is to leave my house and not get stuck in traffic. If I leave at 7:00, I'm usually good. If I leave at 7:05, I'm stuck for maybe half and hour.

So, to prevent this, I found a route to college that doesn't go on the expressway. This route could allow me to get as much as 10 more minutes of sleep!

Moral of the story: Don't be afraid to take the back roads. During rush hour, they may be faster.

Fridays and Magic

Thank God it's Friday!

Fridays are the best days of my life. The way my schedule works out, they are the only days that I dont have to get up ridiculously early to get to classes on time.

I was reading a blog on my college's website, and the girl writing it said that it usually isn't difficult to set up your schedule so that you have no classes on Friday. Definitely look into this. It would make your life so much easier. Plus you would have something to look forward to the rest of the week.

RIT uses a quarter system. Instead of having two semesters, there are four quarters in a year: fall, winter, spring, and summer. The first quarter of your freshman year, they register you for all your classes. Then, starting in the winter quarter, you register for your own. My goal: no Friday classes and no 8:00AM classes. Mornig classes are of the devil.

Another reason to love Friday: Payday!!
Not that the money's gonna stick around for long.

AND, did you know that Fridays are magic?
Oh yes. Example:
This morning I realized that my gas gauge was on E. I was completely out of cash.
The worst part was that I had the money to completely fill my gas tank.
But it was in rolled coin, and I had no time to go and cash it.
So I found a ten that my mom let me borrow, since I'm getting paid today and would pay her back tonight. Now for the magic.

I was trying to decide which jacket I should wear today. I wanted to wear my brown leather, but it didn't match. So I put on the black leather.
I reach into the pocket, and guess what I find?
A ten dollar bill.

It's those kinds of moments that will keep you going as a commuter.

On Commuting

Commuting to college. It's a novel idea. It seems like a fairly simple way to save some money in your college years.

Whenever I told someone that I was going to commute to college, they always wanted to know why. I would tell them that I would be saving about seven thousand dollars a year since I didn't have to pay for housing on campus.

Seems like a good reason, right?

Wrong.
I quickly realized this by maybe the second week of classes. It just hit me: "This was a bad idea."

First, you have to get up earlier to account for travel time. And I am NOT a morning person at all.

Second, once you're out the door, you have morning traffic to deal with. And being stuck in traffic while you're still only half awake is not fun. That's how you wake up to honking cars and a police officer knocking on your window.

Third, and possibly worst, you have to pay for gas. Which when you're getting paid minimum wage will quickly eat up your paycheck.

Despite all these reasons, I continue to commute to college. Call be stubborn, but that is my decision and I won't be persuaded.

The purpose of this blog is to catelogue my struggles (and hopefully triumphs) against mornings, traffic, and exorbitant gas prices.

Wish me luck.
